This sweet face belongs to the one and only Nelly! She came into our care as a stray, but it has been a joy getting to know her. Nelly loves to play with balls and toys and would love an active adopter who can match her excitement when it comes to play time! You’ll hardly ever catch this gal without a toy hanging out of her mouth, especially when she’s greeting her favorite people. Trust us when we say sweet Nelly is 100% special! If you are looking for a little joy in your life, consider Nelly! You can meet her, at our El Cajon Campus today! Learn more at

Adoption Fees Waived for Dogs, Cats and Small Pets!

  • After taking in more than 275 stray pets in the days following the July Fourth holiday, we’re running low on space — especially for large dogs.
  • We currently have more than 1,700 companion animals in our care and more than 600 of them are available for adoption — just waiting to give and receive love.
  • So we’re asking for the community to consider opening their hearts and homes to a shelter pet!
  • We’re waiving adoption fees for adult dogs, cats (7 months and older) and small pets through July 31 with our Summer is Cooler with a Pet adoption promotion.

Benefits of Adopting from San Diego Humane Society:

  • You know you’re getting an animal who has been assessed behaviorally and medically.
  • San Diego Humane Society offers an adoption guarantee, training advice, pet supplies and educational information to support pet families for the life of the animal.
  • You can contact our Behavior Helpline to get expert guidance about behavior or training concerns.
  • By adopting, you’ll help create space in the shelter for other animals in need!
