A Cy Young Award winner on the baseball field, and now a cancer-survivor off it, one of the San Diego’s favorite sons is set to present the 8th-Annual Randy Jones Run/Walk for Independence 5K on Saturday, February 17th at 8:30 a.m. at Crown Point Park.
The family event, which includes a scenic run/walk around Mission Bay Park, has become a must-attend staple on the San Diego event calendar for nearly a decade, and benefits Home of Guiding Hands, which has been committed to providing quality community support, critical housing, and life-skills training for children and adults with development disabilities for over 50 years.
“After my cancer scare last year, I am more excited about the Run/Walk than ever before,” said the popular Jones, who thrilled fans and won baseball’s highest-pitching honor in 1976. “To see this community come together once again to help Home of Guiding Hands touches my heart. For years, I have been impressed with the wide range of services they provide to children and adults with developmental and intellectual disabilities. They give those who need it, a purpose, and focus on what they can do vs what they can’t.”
Home of Guiding Hands (HGH) is one of San Diego County’s largest providers of supports and services, coming to the aid of more than 2,500 children, adolescents and adults with developmental disabilities each year. HGH believes that individuals thrive when they can direct their own lives in a setting that offers a more fulfilling lifestyle, provides individualized attention, increased opportunities for self-sufficiency, and encourages great community integration and access.
Thanks to Jones and his leadership, HGH has raised well-over $200,000 since this family fun event began in 2011. Along with Padres Friar and promotion squad, Randy Jones will once again be at this year’s Run/Walk signing autographs and meeting fans. The event will also include face painting, a children’s play area, vendor fair and much more. Each participant will receive a participation medal, goody bag and t-shirt.
