Magic listener, Ava Blackwell, nominated her friend, Teresa Smith, for Hometown Hero
Teresa Smith is the founder of Dreams for Change, an organization with the goal of meeting the needs of families and individuals who had been adversely affected by the financial downturn.
Here is Ava’s nomination letter for Teresa:
My boss….She started a organization, “Dreams for Change” in 2009 knowing there was a need for Homeless individuals living in their car but who no longer could afford a home to call their own. The loss of a vehicle is seen as one of the final steps to chronic homelessness. We focus on stopping the downward spiral of homelessness by bringing stability to families and individuals who are living in their vehicles. There car is their home…Temporarily. She makes sure we treat the participants with respect and dignity. They are no different than anyone else who doesn’t have a home. Teresa is always thinking of ways to make the homeless participants comfortable, per se in their situation. She makes sure the kids have pumpkins at Halloween, she makes sure the participants have a hot meal on Thanksgiving and she makes sure no one goes without at Christmas. She even has a food truck where people can use their EBT card to get a hot and healthy meal. It’s never a time I didn’t say I didn’t want to come to work, due to my boss and that says a lot. She trusts my opinion and that’s all I ask for and that’s what makes my boss a Hometown Hero.
