Our friend Ryan Wilcox is one of the strongest kids we know. Diagnosed with brain cancer at the age of 3, Ryan’s parents, Mike and Amy Wilcox, were told there was no way he would beat it. He did. We met Ryan when he was 7 years old on Kids News Day. He was the cover kid for that year and we interviewed him on the air. We realized what a strong and fun kid he was and stayed in touch throughout the years.
Over the years Ryan has had relapses and issues requiring many procedures including over 100 blood and platelet transfusions. In the last year alone Ryan has received two bone marrow transplants from his younger sister. This kid faces all and conquers.
Ryan is the biggest Captain America fan you will ever meet, for good reason. So, it was incredibly special for him to meet his super heroes Chris Evans, Robert Downey Jr, and Gwyneth Paltrow. You can read all about him at #ryanstrong on Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook.
Ryan, and so many other kids with cancer and disease are alive today because of the San Diego Blood Bank. Ryan asked his old Boy Scout Troop to help them give back to the San Diego Blood Bank by hosting a blood drive! We invite you to participate in Operation Saving Captain Ryan Blood Drive and Bone Marrow Registration this Saturday, May 28th from 10:00am to 3:30pm at Fletcher Hills Shopping Center, 2860 Fletcher Hills Parkway.
Ryan goes to school at Grossmont High and they recently held a pep rally for Ryan where he stated that, “Strength doesn’t really come from your muscles. It comes from your spirit, your heart, and love.” True that, Ryan!
